Catholic Apologetics

"All of you, obey your bishops as Jesus Christ obeyed the Father, and obey the priesthood as you would the Apostles... Wherever the bishop is, there must be the congregation, just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church." (Ignatius of Antioch, ~AD 107.)

Welcome to A Catholic Thinker, a web site devote to Catholic apologetics - that is, a defense of the Catholic faith from both atheist and Protestant attacks.

In addition to the site's essays (the main feature), all written by the site author, there is a Links section and a blog, within which I may pontificate on "broad" Catholic issues - that is, life.  This includes politics and culture.  (I also reserve the right to not blog about anything for months on end; it doesn't mean I'm dead.)

About me: I am a layman with a day job, and not a scholar.  By that I mean primarily that I rely mainly on secondary sources (that is, the official teachings of the Church as interpreted by the Church as well as published Catholic authors) for my essays rather than my own Scriptural exegesis and study of other source material (such as the Fathers).  I do not speak Greek, Latin, or Hebrew, and I am not a priest or someone else who carries any authority in the Church.  I am as careful as I can be, as a matter of fact, to ensure that my essays never include any of my own theology, since what protection from error could I rely on?  (I would still like to pursue a nihil obstat at some point to have assurance in that regard but I am highly confident that I am publishing no material contrary to Church teaching in any way.)

(As for why I have written these essays, for what it's worth: I have found that writing (and frequently updating) this material has been a really excellent way to know it inside and out.  And that, of course, is a good thing, for knowing the Church's teachings and history is always a good thing, for in-person oral apologetics as well as our own edification.  So, in part, it's for me, and for those that know me and are also interested in these topics.

I use this body of material in debate with atheists and Protestants who deny Catholic teaching.  I believe that in this small way I contribute to spreading the message of the Catholic Church, which is the message of Christ.)

I may be contacted via the email at the bottom of this page.
